Help, can anyone recommend a good painter and decorator to repaint and possibly paper my living room? I've phoned 2 so far, one turned up earlier than he said he would then was very angry with me that I wasn't in, and the other hasn't replied with a quote.

Room-hunting help.

Posted by [info]stormsearch in [info]edinburgers on 2008.07.21 at 22:59
I need some help looking for a room.

It's for a young man who has ADHD as well as two main mental disabilities: he has no concept of ownership (resulting in kleptomania), and he has the emotional maturity of a 12 year old, in certain ways. (He can hold a job, but is easily led, has to be told to shower/clean up his dishes/etc.)

He is currently having to stay with his parents, but will shortly be homeless; they are both elderly and entirely unable to cope with having him at home, so it is necessary to find him a room.

The council has been approached, but they can only currently offer him accommodation in an area of council housing which also has some rather bad drug problems. This is no good: would you let an easily led, very naive 12 year old hang out with drug dealers? It's not a good idea; they don't want him getting into trouble.

He can't live in a flat with other people because he has a 12 year old's approach to washing up: ie, it doesn't happen to him! Additionally, the kleptomania means that if he sees something he wants or needs, he will take it. He'll realise afterwards that he didn't mean to, but by then it's too late.

So, it looks like perhaps a long stay hostel might be the answer? But it needs to be one that has single rooms: he absolutely cannot share with other people, for their sake. His family are at their wits end, so if you can provide any suggestions or recommendations, it would really be a life-saver.

Thank you for anything you can come up with!

Does anyone know of a shop in Edinburgh with 'Cheesy chick' or 'Cheesy Tina' Crumpler bags in stock? I'm finding it really hard to get a good idea of the sizes of them from the websites and would like to try them out before i buy one...

Thanks :-)

On my travels round the interweb I came across this campaign, http://www.actsa.org/page-1022-Dignity!%20Period..html

Having balked the day before about the price of a pack of sanitary towels (it's been a long time since I've had this issue) when I was "caught short" (having not had a "proper" menstrual period in *years* and completely unprepared for the resurgence of my menstrual cycle early Friday morning) this issue was in my mind when I read the campaign info. In a nutshell, women and girls in Zimbabwe of childbearing age have to pay the equivalent of half a months working wage for a packet of towels and bear in mind that the country's unemployment rate is around 80%. Women are forced to use newspaper and dirty rags as sanitary protection, leading to infections. It did make me feel rather shitty for complaining to myself about spending a couple of quid on a packet of towels when I could patiently easily afford it. I guess it's an example of what I've been striving hard to do for years which is (no idea what the correct term for it is) but maybe thinking globally instead of locally? That or not just be complacent and think about the bigger picture.

Anyway, it's a worthy cause so I donated a tenner. *middle-class guilt assuaged for the time being*

Directly related, all this fuss about inflation in this country and the cost of food/fuel/mortgages increasing, spare a thought for Zimbabwe, where inflation is OFFICIALLY described as exceeding 2,200,000%. source (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7515823.stm) Kinda puts it into perspective, doesn't it!

Note, this post isn't an attack, appeal, or attempt to make people feel guilty, more just my thoughts on the matter. I hate that I have to put that in but it is just a disclaimer.

Football!

Posted by [info]yodd in [info]edinburgers on 2008.07.20 at 13:37
Can anyone play five-a-side football tonight?

I play in a team at the Portobello Power League.

Due to re-arrangements, we have two games tonight, one at 6.30, the other at 8.30 - due to a great list of unforeseen/unexpected circumstances, our numbers have been slightly decimated for this evening!

Can anyone play? Warning - we are really, really shit and just play for a laugh, although usually by the 15th goal conceded, its not as funny!

If anyone can come along and play in either game to help make up our numbers tonight, that would be great, better still, if anyone can play in both matches, that would really help!

Cheers!

Had a really lovely evening last night, made a really nice dinner (steak, salad, baked tattie, corn) in an effort to get some vits into me and make me feel better. Ate some nice fruit yesterday as well. Dithered for a couple of hours about going out 'cos I had ladies' pains but eventually though "sod it" and went down to [info]princealbert's 40th birthday do armed with a bottle of champers. Party was fantastic, loads and loads of lovely people there in beautiful outfits. After a couple of hours I headed up to the pub to meet Hendershanks and the Beard and had a nice time with them. Although I ordered a Westons and had a sip of it thinking it would be appley sweet goodness and it was horrid :(. Tracey ended up drinking it for me though and she ordered me a pear cider, which was far yummier! Tracey said it was far drier than Magners and that's why I probably don't like it 'cos I like my cider to taste like juice. We ended up heading up to mine for a nightcap, which was fun. On the way we saw some punks, who invited us to a party which was on the way but we didn't go. Got to bed the back of three and and had a good sleep.

Suggestions for a convention venue?

Hello Edinburgers,

I'm helping to organise a bookcrossing convention in Edinburgh during July 2009. It's my responsibility to hunt down a venue. Would anybody be able to provide suggestions? I have already contacted The Pleasance and Teviot and am awaiting their replies.

I've been given a long list of requirements, but the basic ones are these
- Room for 120 people seated (preferably nice comfy seats)
- Two breakout rooms holding 10-25 people with audio-visual facilities
- Central-ish location
- Disabled access
- Reasonably priced lunch options that cater for special diets and allergies. Alternatively, a nearby cafe might do.
- Room hire as cheap as possible! (One quote we've got is £200 + VAT which is OK for us)

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions received :-)
